Future Directions

The future of this project will be to incorporate PEG, silk, and a model drug directly together to create microspheres capable of being inhaled through a nebulizer. Preliminary work has been done on this aspect of the project, but unfortunately there wasn't enough time to see it through.

This research has shown the promise of using silk-based microparticles for inhalable drug delivery applications. With a consistent and customizable release profile along with high biocompatibility shown in vitro, there are many paths forward to optimize this delivery system. We are excited about the future of inhalable silk-based drug delivery and the many doors it will open for non-cytotoxic delivery.
